Tom, I would suggest that impression was articulated by two very different men, at least in my mind………..

John Wyer with the title of his book “That Certain Sound”.

And when Chuck Berry sang this verse it brings to mind the freedom of spirit that Can-Am represented – that highway sound…………….

The motor cooled down, the heat went down
And that’s when I heard that highway sound.
Cadillac a-sittin’ like a ton of lead
A hundred and ten a half a mile ahead.
The Cadillac lookin’ like it’s sittin’ still
And I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill.

Or am I just getting old?

Little more than snow fence, hay bales, and the (very) occasional stretch of armco separated us from the cars: Maclarens, John Surtees in the 2H “Whale.” We sat just downhill from and outside the corkscrew, a spot directly accessible from Ft. Ord (coming on interior roads from the area of the Land Navigation Range). I tried to identify the spot a few years ago, but changes to the topography in that area meant I could get close but not “spot on.” That was between Vietnam tours for a newly-married twenty-something. The impression it made on me was profound, and had everything to do with my involvement thirty years later.

Look at the hill in the shot of Follmer going past the pits — it’s COVERED with people. The Can-Am was a happening. Laguna hasn’t seen crowds like that since.

But insightful. Taken by itself, “close racing” placates the rabble, but in no way satisfies the soul of the admirer of the automotive arts and sciences.

If that seems snobbish, so be it. But it must be understood that this “niche” of sports car racing only exists because there are spectators who appreciate its art. If they were satisfied by close racing they wouldn’t be at the likes of Laguna Seca; they’d be – with the masses – at Talladega.

If Grand Am can’t find – doesn’t allow – race cars that satisfy the soul, their acquisition of the ALMS nemesis will not in itself make them – or this sport – successful.
