Sure on paper it sounds great, create a level playing field and let the drivers be the stars. But as sportscar fans we recognize the cars to be the stars, and regardless of driver preferences we all have our favorite manufacturers we root for as well. When you have a race fielded entirely of identical machines, aside from livery, it’s extremely difficult to get much of an emotional response from a fan base. With sportscars it’s easy – you like Corvettes, you root for them. BMW guy, you go for the M3 etc. With IndyCar you have 3 options – 1)you like Danica Patrick because you’re dense, 2) you like a front-runner because you follow the bandwagon, or 3) you pick a driver’s name out of a hat and start rooting for them. To this point I think NASCAR is wildly successful in the US due to strict brand loyalty, you want something you can relate to and cheer for accordingly. But that’s just my $0.02
