David

thank you for your comment. Having worked with Martin during his final appearance at Le Mans and known him during his long and successful career I am not convinced that he would have behaved like that. A very hard racer? Absolutely no doubt, but always within the boundaries that he set himself…………as to Ayrton and Michael, I suspect you are right.

Herbie is one of the Good Guys, he was always willing to help out with passes, advice etc. He lives on the South Coast these days and I only see him in person rarely, mostly if I am forced to things like the Autosport Show. Of course he is on the TV most Grand Prix in his FIA role.

I wrote a piece on Brabham for SpeedHunters a while back……..it might interest you.

I was particularly interested in your account of times spent in the King’s Head in Shepperton and mention of Herbie Blash.
In 2004 I bought a 1991 Mazda MX5 BBR turbo in BRG from a lady who said it had been owned by a “local mechanic”. Recently I decided I wanted to sell it but was worried that it had no service history for the first seven years and researched on Google to find it was originally registered as H4HBE and belonged to Mr. Blash before being bought by Jim Henley in August 1998 who had it serviced at Church Square Autos, Shepperton. Apparently it was bought by Martin Brundle and presented to Herbie Blash as a thank you for Herbie giving him a start in Formula 1. It’s a fantastic little car and I will possibly keep it and try to find out more about its history.

Both myself and a friend raced regularly in supporting races that season (me in FF, my pal in Historics), and we also “supported” (hindered?) Tony Trevor as impromptu F3 pit-crew a couple of times. Although our paths crossed a few times that year the only time I spoke to AS was as he surveyed the wreckage; “Will you make the race?” A shake of the head and a rueful smile, then a polite “Thank You” as he acknowledged that I was wearing a race suit. He stirred intently at the car for ages until the recovery truck lifted it off its perch at the top of “The Mountain”. Just what he was looking at on the mangled mess I’m not entirely sure, but I’ve never seen that level of focused concentration before or since in any walk of life. And what a championship that F3 racing season was – almost everybody who raced seemed to get an F1 crack further down the line (apart from those you mentioned, Mario Hytten and Ross Cheever also raced I think…).
Since 1994 I’ve not really had a favourite driver (Clark, Peterson,Gilles V,Senna – you can see the trend…) but often wonder just how Senna v Schumacher would have developed. Personally, I think Ayrton would have turned the Williams into a winner in 1994 and won the title again and again until 1997. Michael might not have got the opportunity at Ferrari and maybe never won a title at all…..
